Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 72mm ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 72mm ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter | Longer exposures in daylight
To turn a bright daylight scene into a longer exposure, an ND filter lets you keep the shutter open longer without changing the scene’s lighting. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 72mm ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter reduces the light reaching the camera by five stops. That can make moving water blur into a softer surface, or clouds shift across a longer exposure. It suits photographers who want to control motion in bright conditions, rather than relying on a small aperture alone. A five-stop reduction gives you room to lengthen the shutter speed while keeping your chosen aperture and ISO; for example, 1/30 second becomes about one second. The result depends on the light and your starting exposure, of course. It’s a focused tool for deliberate shutter-speed control, especially when you want movement to register in the photograph.
Specialist Note
The 72mm diameter is the key physical detail: it tells you which lens filter thread this is designed to fit, so match that size before planning a setup. Its five-stop reduction is enough to make a clear difference in daylight; for moving water, for instance, a starting exposure of 1/30 second can stretch to roughly one second at the same aperture and ISO. I’d use it with a tripod when you want the surrounding scene to stay crisp while motion softens. It suits landscape photographers who want that control without changing aperture. One limit: five stops may still leave you short of very long exposures in strong sun.
