Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 72mm ND 2.7 (9stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 72mm ND 2.7 (9stops) Filter | Make long exposures in daylight
A 9-stop light reduction gives this Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND filter a clear job: letting you use much slower shutter speeds in bright conditions. It suits photographers who want movement in water or clouds to soften into a longer exposure, rather than recording every detail sharply. The ND 2.7 rating describes that strong reduction, so it’s particularly useful when a modest adjustment won’t give you enough extra exposure time. You can keep your chosen aperture and ISO, then lengthen the shutter speed to change how movement appears in the frame. That makes it a considered tool for landscape work and other scenes where you can keep the camera steady. The 72mm size identifies the filter’s diameter; match that measurement to the filter size required by your lens. This is a fixed-strength filter, so its effect stays at nine stops rather than being adjusted on the filter.
Specialist Note
Nine stops is a substantial cut in light: a metered 1/125 sec exposure becomes about 4 seconds if you keep the aperture and ISO unchanged. That’s enough time to blur flowing water, so I’d use this Firecrest when you want movement to read as a smooth shape, with the camera held steady. Its ND 2.7 rating tells you to plan for a big shutter-speed change, not a small tweak. The 72mm diameter is useful when your lens takes that filter size; it won’t suit a different diameter without an appropriate way to adapt it. One honest point: at nine stops, it can be too strong when the light is already low.
