Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 72mm ND 3 (10stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 72mm ND 3 (10stops) Filter | Create long exposures in bright light
The defining choice here is the 72 mm diameter: it gives this Formatt Hitech Firecrest filter a specific size for lenses that use a 72 mm filter. Its ND 3 strength reduces light by 10 stops, making it useful when you want a much longer exposure than the available light would normally allow. That’s particularly helpful for smoothing moving water or recording cloud movement in daylight, when a short shutter speed would otherwise freeze the scene. It can also let you use a wider aperture in bright conditions, without relying on a faster shutter speed to control exposure. This neutral-density filter suits photographers who want deliberate motion blur or more control over exposure in strong light. The effect is substantial, so it’s best approached with a clear exposure plan: the filter changes the amount of light reaching the camera by a full ten stops.
Specialist Note
Once the 10-stop reduction is accounted for, you can work towards shutter times that would be impractical without the filter in daylight. For example, a scene that meters at 1/30 sec without it would need roughly 30 seconds with this ND 3 filter, which can turn flowing water into a smooth blur. The 72 mm diameter is useful when your lens takes that filter size, so it’s worth matching the size before planning a setup. I’d suggest it to photographers who want long exposures in bright conditions, especially for water or moving clouds. One honest consideration: ten stops is a strong reduction, so it’s less suited to situations where you need to keep shutter speeds fast.
