Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 55mm Neutral Density 0.6 (2 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 55mm Neutral Density 0.6 (2 Stops) | Control shutter speed in brighter light
Without an ND filter, bright conditions can leave you choosing between a faster shutter speed and a narrower aperture. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 55mm Neutral Density 0.6 reduces the light reaching the camera by two stops, giving you more room to make that choice. It suits photographers who want to slow their shutter or keep a wider aperture when the available light would otherwise get in the way. For example, a longer exposure can soften the movement of flowing water, while a wider aperture can help keep a subject separated from its background. The 55mm size is for lenses with a matching 55mm filter thread. This filter is best for modest light reduction and more control over exposure; it won’t replace a stronger ND filter when you need a very long exposure in bright daylight.
Specialist Note
Two stops won’t turn harsh midday sun into a dramatic, minutes-long exposure; that’s the limit to keep in mind. The reason I’d still recommend this Firecrest Ultra is that two stops is a practical amount of control for everyday shooting. On a lens with a 55mm filter thread, it lets you try a slower shutter without changing the light, or hold onto a wider aperture in brighter conditions. For moving water, for instance, changing 1/30 sec to about 1/8 sec gives the flow more movement in the frame. It’s a considered pick when you want that adjustment, rather than the much heavier light cut needed for extreme long exposures.
