Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 82mm Neutral Density 0.6 (2 Stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 82mm Neutral Density 0.6 (2 Stops) | Create motion blur with a slower shutter
To soften moving water or show motion in a bright scene, a neutral-density filter cuts the light reaching your camera so you can use a slower shutter speed. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest Ultra 82mm Neutral Density 0.6 is a two-stop filter: it reduces the light by enough to make a 1/60-second exposure into 1/15 second at the same aperture and ISO. That gives movement more time to register, while letting you keep the aperture you chose for depth of field. It suits photographers who want a modest, controlled extension to exposure time for scenes such as streams, fountains or moving clouds. The 82mm size is for a lens with a matching filter thread. This is a measured reduction rather than a heavy darkening filter, so it’s most useful when two stops gives you the shutter speed you need.
What two stops lets you do
Use the filter when you want a little more control over shutter speed without changing your chosen aperture. For example, if your exposure without the filter is 1/60 second, the two-stop reduction allows 1/15 second at the same ISO and aperture. That longer exposure can make flowing water look smoother; a tripod helps keep stationary parts of the scene steady.
Specialist Note
This 82mm Firecrest Ultra gives you two stops of shutter-time flexibility without needing to close your aperture. The 82mm measurement is the filter diameter, so it suits a lens with a matching front thread; that’s the practical detail to get right before choosing it. Its 0.6 neutral-density reduction is useful for a stream or fountain when you want movement to blur but still want to keep your chosen aperture. As a working example, a 1/60-second exposure becomes 1/15 second at the same ISO and aperture. I’d think of this as a moderate reduction: for very long exposures in bright daylight, two stops may not be enough on its own.
