H&Y HD EVO-Series IRND8 Filter Kit 72mm
H&Y HD EVO-Series IRND8 Filter Kit 72mm | Three stops of light control
The defining choice is the 72mm filter size: it gives you a clear match point for a lens with a 72mm front filter thread. H&Y’s HD EVO-Series IRND8 kit is built around neutral-density reduction, which cuts the light reaching the camera. In the usual ND8 notation, that means one-eighth of the light, or three stops. That extra control is useful in bright conditions: landscape photographers can lengthen a shutter speed to soften moving water, while portrait photographers can keep a wider aperture outdoors without pushing exposure too high. This is a fixed-strength option, so it makes most sense when a three-stop reduction is the amount you want; it isn’t a way to dial continuously between densities. You can use the density as a predictable starting point for exposure changes: count three stops from your meter reading, then refine for the scene. For a lens marked 72mm, the size is easy to identify when selecting a filter.
Specialist Note
At a sunlit river, the bright surface can make a longer exposure difficult; this is the sort of scene where the H&Y IRND8 has a clear job. I’d use its three-stop reduction to move a starting exposure of 1/125 sec to roughly 1/15 sec, then adjust for the light and the effect you want. That can soften flowing water, though it won’t produce a very long, misty exposure in every lighting condition. The 72mm size matters when choosing: it’s intended for a lens with a matching 72mm filter thread, so look for that marking on the lens. I’d suggest this kit to landscape photographers who want a defined reduction for bright scenes, rather than a density they can vary continuously.
