Laowa Nanomorph 55mm T2.9 1.5X LF (Blue) PL/EF (Lao-55-LF-PL-B) | Anamorphic framing for considered filmmaking

Want an anamorphic look without moving to a wider focal length? The Laowa Nanomorph 55mm T2.9 1.5X LF is a manual-focus standard prime for filmmakers who want a more elongated frame while keeping a familiar 55mm perspective. Its large-format coverage makes it suited to large-format video setups, and the 1.5X squeeze gives you an anamorphic image to work with in post. It’s a lens for planned shots rather than quick, hands-off recording: you set focus yourself, which gives you direct control over where attention falls in a scene. I’d consider it for scripted dialogue, composed portraits or product sequences where the frame and focus can be set deliberately. The T2.9 maximum aperture gives you room to work when the scene isn’t brightly lit, though exposure still depends on your camera and lighting. If you want an autofocus lens for spontaneous run-and-gun work, this isn’t the one.

Specialist Note

Does the 1.5X in this Nanomorph mean I need to plan for anamorphic delivery? Yes: think of it as a lens for a workflow where you’ll desqueeze the image in post, rather than a standard spherical frame straight from camera. I’d use it for a carefully framed dialogue shot or a deliberate product move, setting the composition first and pulling focus manually as the subject moves. T2.9 gives you a practical starting point in a controlled interior, but it won’t replace thoughtful lighting when levels are very low. It suits filmmakers who want that distinct wide-frame treatment and are happy to take time over focus and finishing.
