Meyer Optik Görlitz Biotar 75 f/1.5 II Leica M-Mount
Meyer Optik Görlitz Biotar 75 f/1.5 II Leica M-Mount | A portrait lens for selective focus
The defining design decision is pairing a 75mm focal length with a maximum aperture of f/1.5. That wide opening gives you the option to work with selective focus and in lower light than a smaller maximum aperture would allow; the focal length is well suited to tighter portraits and details. This Meyer Optik Görlitz Biotar is for photographers using the Leica M-Mount system who want to give a subject more emphasis in the frame, rather than make every scene feel broad and expansive. It’s most compelling for portrait work, where you can use the wide aperture to keep attention on a face, or for details that benefit from a tighter view. The appeal here is the particular combination of focal length and light-gathering aperture. It asks you to choose your framing and focus with care, rather than treating the lens as an all-purpose way to include everything around your subject.
Specialist Note
At f/1.5, you have the option to open the lens wide when light is limited or when you want a portrait to feel more separated from its surroundings. I’d use that setting with care: the focus area is narrow, so take time over the point you want sharp, especially on a face. The 75mm focal length gives you a tighter view for portraits and small details, without asking you to fill the frame with a wide scene. This suits a Leica M-Mount photographer who enjoys shaping a picture through framing and focus. One honest point: f/1.5 isn’t automatically the right setting for every shot; when more of your subject needs to be sharp, a smaller aperture is the sensible direction.
