Nikon Z F SL Body

Nikon Z F SL Body | Full-frame detail in a classic-style body

Full-frame cameras don’t always feel inviting to carry or use; the Nikon Z F SL Body brings a 24.5-megapixel full-frame sensor into a compact mirrorless body with a design inspired by classic Nikon cameras. It’s a distinctive option for keen enthusiasts and semi-professional photographers who want interchangeable lenses, strong still-image performance and video in one camera. The Nikon Z mount gives you access to Nikon Z lenses, while the EXPEED 7 processor handles demanding autofocus and image processing tasks. The full-frame sensor’s back-illuminated design is useful when light levels drop, such as for indoor portraits or evening scenes. For moving subjects, the camera combines subject recognition with autofocus tracking, so you can follow activity rather than continually resetting focus yourself. Its in-body stabilisation is another advantage for handheld photography, particularly with fixed-focal-length lenses. For creative work beyond stills, UHD 4K recording makes the Z f a capable photo-and-video body, and Full HD recording supports slow-motion footage at up to 120p. Pixel Shift adds a more considered option for static subjects where fine detail matters. With its classic styling and current imaging features, this Nikon is well suited to photographers who enjoy a more tactile-looking camera without giving up a modern full-frame system.

Handling and controls

• Classic-inspired styling: The body takes its visual cues from Nikon’s FM2-era cameras. It brings a different character to a camera bag while housing a modern mirrorless system.
• Subject detection autofocus: The camera recognises nine types of subject, including people, animals and vehicles. Its 3D Tracking mode follows erratically moving subjects across the frame.
• Five-axis in-body VR: Stabilisation is rated at up to eight stops. The system targets the active focus point, which is useful when your subject sits away from the centre of the frame.
• Pixel Shift mode: Combine as many as 32 exposures into a 96-megapixel RAW image. It’s intended for scenes that remain still, where extra captured detail is the priority.
• Monochrome control: A dedicated switch changes the camera from colour to either of its monochrome options. It’s a direct way to commit to a black-and-white approach while shooting.
• Two card slots: The camera accepts an SD card and a microSD card. That gives you two storage formats in the body for managing your images and recordings.

In the hand

The camera weighs 710g with battery and SD card, so it has a reassuringly substantial feel rather than the featherweight character of a small compact. Its 3.2-inch vari-angle touchscreen is useful when framing from high or low positions, and the touch interface gives you another way to work with the camera. The articulated screen also suits video recording when you need to monitor framing from a less conventional angle.
