OM SYSTEM M.Zuiko Digital ED 17mm f/1.8 II Black | A bright, wide view

Trying to fit a broad landscape, a building frontage or more of the night sky into your frame can mean backing into a wall—or settling for a crop. The OM SYSTEM M.Zuiko Digital ED 17mm f/1.8 II Black is a fixed-focal-length lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras, with a 65° angle of view that gives you room to include more of a scene. Autofocus helps when you want to move between details and wider compositions. This lens suits photographers drawn to landscapes and architecture, and it has a clear role after dark, too. Its bright maximum aperture can help when you’re photographing under available starlight. As a prime lens, it keeps framing straightforward: choose your position, compose, and make the frame rather than zooming in and out. For city streets or open country, that deliberate way of working can feel refreshingly direct.

Specialist Note

At f/1.8 beneath a clear night sky, I’d start with a test frame and adjust the exposure until the stars register without washing out the sky. On a Micro Four Thirds body, this lens gives a full-frame-equivalent view of 34mm: there’s room for the surroundings as well as the sky. For architecture, I’d use it to frame a façade, then keep the camera level and position myself square to the building. It suits someone who enjoys choosing a viewpoint and composing carefully. One honest point: the fixed focal length means you’ll need to move to change your framing; it won’t zoom in on a distant detail.
