Rodenstock Variond Extended 49
Rodenstock Variond Extended 49 | Control light for longer exposures
The Rodenstock Variond Extended 49 is a grey ND filter for photographers who need to reduce the light reaching the camera while keeping a scene’s composition intact. Its value is in that simple bit of control: an ND filter lets you choose a slower shutter speed in bright conditions, or work with a wider aperture when the available light would otherwise limit those choices. It suits landscape photographers looking to show movement in water or clouds, as well as anyone who wants more say over exposure in a bright setting. The filter is best understood as an exposure tool, rather than an effect that adds colour or detail. Use it when your preferred shutter speed or aperture calls for less light at the camera, and make your exposure adjustments around the scene in front of you.
Using an ND filter
For a softer rendering of moving water, an ND filter can let you use a longer exposure than the light would normally allow. Keep the camera steady during that exposure, and choose a shutter speed to suit how much movement you want to show. The same reduction in light can also help when you want a wider aperture in bright conditions, giving you more control over the exposure settings you choose. The result depends on the light, subject movement and exposure you set; the filter is a way to widen those options, not a preset look. Its grey colour identifies it as a neutral-density filter, intended to reduce light without making colour the point of the effect.
Specialist Note
The Rodenstock Variond Extended 49 is for reducing incoming light so you can choose a slower shutter speed in bright scenes. I’d suggest it to someone who wants to make water look smoother: keep the camera still and lengthen the exposure until the movement reads the way you want. It can also help when you’re aiming for a wider aperture outdoors and need to hold exposure in check. The grey colour suits this straightforward exposure role; it isn’t a filter for adding a colour cast as an effect. One practical point: an ND filter means you’ll need to adjust exposure to account for the reduced light, so choose settings for the scene rather than expecting one fixed result.
