Rycote 5cm Classic-Softie Kit (24/25)
Rycote 5cm Classic-Softie Kit (24/25) | Practical wind protection for microphones
The Rycote 5cm Classic-Softie Kit (24/25) is a microphone windscreen with a 5cm designation, made for sound recordists who need to manage wind noise at the microphone. It suits location dialogue, interviews and ambience recording, where gusts can interfere with speech or detail in a recording. A Softie is a straightforward option when you want a physical cover on the microphone rather than relying on later audio editing to deal with wind. It’s particularly useful for outdoor recording, though it can also help when air movement is affecting a microphone indoors. The kit is aimed at people who already know the microphone setup they need to match; the 24/25 identifier is important when selecting the version. If you’re putting together a recording setup for changing conditions, this gives you a dedicated windscreen format without adding controls or a complicated setup process.
Specialist Note
Once it’s on the microphone, the setup stays simple: you can concentrate on the recording rather than managing a separate windscreen by hand. For outdoor interviews or location ambience, I’d fit it before recording and keep the microphone aimed and positioned carefully; the cover helps address wind noise, but it can’t replace sensible mic placement. The 24/25 marking is the key identifier for choosing this particular kit, so I’d match that detail to the setup you’re buying for. Its black finish is discreet on location, where a low-key accessory is often preferable. It’s a focused piece of kit, not a substitute for choosing the right microphone in the first place.
