Rycote HC-22 Shotgun Microphone (22cm)
Rycote HC-22 Shotgun Microphone (22cm) | Focused sound for spoken audio
Without a separate microphone, spoken audio often has to rely on whatever sound the recording device picks up around it. The Rycote HC-22 is a shotgun microphone for people who want to give a speaker’s voice more attention in a recording. It suits interviewers, filmmakers and video creators working with dialogue or a presenter speaking to camera. A shotgun mic is designed to be aimed towards the sound you want, making placement part of getting a clear result: point it towards the person speaking, rather than treating it as a general room microphone. It’s particularly relevant when the speaker is in front of you and you can choose where the microphone is directed. The HC-22 is a straightforward option to consider for speech-focused recording; it isn’t a substitute for sensible mic placement, and the product information here doesn’t establish any particular connection or mounting system.
Specialist Note
For a one-to-one interview, I’d start by aiming the HC-22 at the person speaking and keeping it as close as your framing allows. Its 22cm length gives you a concrete size to account for when positioning it around a shot; it’s worth planning where the mic will sit rather than assuming it can disappear. As a shotgun microphone, it’s intended to be directed at the voice, so it makes sense for interview dialogue or a presenter’s spoken lines. My honest advice is to treat aiming as essential: a shotgun mic won’t make distant or masked speech clear by itself. If you can position it deliberately, this is a focused tool for spoken audio.
