Rycote Modular Mono Windshield MWS 9 Kit (MZL) | Help keep wind off mono recordings

Wind can turn an outdoor voice recording into a distracting wash of noise. The Rycote Modular Mono Windshield MWS 9 Kit (MZL) is a microphone accessory designed to help shield a mono recording setup from wind. It’s suited to anyone recording spoken audio or other single-channel sound where wind could get in the way: for example, a location interview or a voice recording outside. A windshield won’t remove every sound in the environment, but it addresses wind at the microphone rather than asking you to fix the problem later in editing. The product’s modular mono design makes its intended use clear: a windshield system for mono recording. Its black colour gives it a restrained appearance on a recording setup. If you’re choosing a windshield for a particular microphone, make sure the product designation matches the system you need; the name alone doesn’t identify every microphone it fits.

Specialist Note

For a one-channel outdoor voice take, this is the Rycote kit I’d consider when wind is likely to spoil clean speech. The mono format keeps the focus on a single-channel recording, which suits an interview or spoken narration rather than a stereo ambience setup. I’d put the windshield in place before recording and keep the microphone directed towards the speaker, so the voice remains the point of the take. The black finish is understated on a location setup, where a bright accessory could draw attention. It’s a focused product: choose it for mono work, and make sure the MWS 9 MZL designation is the one your setup calls for.
