Rycote Windjammer WJ 5

Rycote Windjammer WJ 5 | Help keep wind out of your audio

For outdoor speech recording, reducing the sound of wind at the microphone can help keep words clearer and easier to follow. The Rycote Windjammer WJ 5 is a microphone accessory made for that wind-management role; “WJ 5” is the model designation. It suits people recording spoken audio or location sound where moving air may interfere with the recording. A windjammer addresses wind reaching the microphone, rather than replacing careful mic placement or improving the room itself. That makes it most relevant when you need to record outside and want the voice or surrounding sound to remain the focus. The product name identifies the accessory and its model, but doesn’t identify a specific microphone fit, so treat compatibility as an essential part of choosing it. For a recorder building a kit around a particular mic, getting that match right matters more than assuming a model number tells the whole story.

Where it fits in your recording setup

A windjammer is aimed at a specific problem: wind affecting microphone audio. It’s therefore most relevant for location work, such as recording an interview outdoors or capturing spoken notes in an exposed setting. Think of it as one part of the recording setup, not a fix for every unwanted sound. It won’t change the words being spoken or the surrounding environment; its role is to help manage wind at the microphone. The WJ 5 name gives you a precise model to identify when discussing or selecting this accessory.
