Rycote Windjammer WJ 6
Rycote Windjammer WJ 6 | Help reduce wind noise in recordings
The defining decision is to make this a windjammer for microphone use: its purpose is to help control wind noise while you record. That matters when a gust would otherwise compete with speech or other sounds you’re trying to capture. The Rycote Windjammer WJ 6 is an accessory for people working with microphones, including filmmakers recording dialogue outdoors and anyone making spoken recordings where moving air may reach the microphone. It’s most relevant when wind is part of the recording conditions, rather than when you’re simply looking for a general microphone accessory. The name identifies the product as a windjammer, but doesn’t tell us which microphones it fits, so I wouldn’t assume compatibility from the model name alone. If it suits your microphone, it gives you a focused way to address wind in your recording setup without changing what you’re recording or how you want it to sound.
Specialist Note
For filmmakers recording outdoor interviews or spoken scenes, the WJ 6 is the sort of accessory to consider when wind is getting into the microphone recording. “Windjammer” is the useful clue in its name: this is aimed at managing wind, not shaping the sound as an effect. As a microphone accessory from Rycote, it belongs in an audio setup rather than being a camera support or control. I’d consider it for dialogue in an exposed location, or for recording speech near moving air, and plan the microphone position with the wind in mind as well. The honest caveat is that the name alone doesn’t establish fit; match it to the microphone before building it into your setup.
