Tamron 11-20mm f/2.8 Di III-A RXD for Sony E-Mount APS-C | Fast, ultra-wide views for Sony APS-C

The Tamron 11-20mm f/2.8 Di III-A RXD for Sony E-Mount APS-C combines an ultra-wide zoom range with a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture. It’s made for Sony APS-C camera owners who want to fit more into the frame, from broad landscapes to the lines and proportions of architecture. The 11-20mm range covers a stated angle of view of 104° to 71°, so you can choose how much of a scene to include without changing lenses. For night-sky photography, the f/2.8 aperture is especially useful: it admits more light than a slower maximum aperture, while the wide view takes in a generous stretch of sky. Close focusing adds another creative option. At a minimum focus distance of 0.15m, you can bring a nearby subject forward and let the wide-angle perspective keep its surroundings prominent. That works well for detail-led compositions, too. With autofocus and a compact zoom range, this Tamron brings wide landscape, architectural and astro work together in one lens. Its fixed maximum aperture also means the light-gathering potential stays consistent as you zoom from 11mm to 20mm.

Where this lens shines

  • Ultra-wide zoom range: The 11-20mm focal length covers expansive scenes and tighter wide-angle framing. Its stated 104°–71° angle of view describes how much of a scene fits across that range.
  • Constant f/2.8 aperture: The maximum aperture remains f/2.8 throughout the zoom range. That’s handy when light is limited, and keeps the available maximum aperture consistent as you change focal length.
  • Close focusing at 0.15m: The minimum focus distance is just 15cm. Bring a foreground detail close to the lens and use the broad view to retain plenty of context around it.
  • Moisture-resistant construction: The barrel has a moisture-resistant construction for use in less favourable conditions. A fluorine coating on the front element helps protect the lens surface.
  • Optical design: The lens uses 12 elements in 10 groups, including two aspherical elements, one XLD element and two LD elements. These specialised elements are intended to help control optical aberrations across the image.
  • BBAR-G2 coating: Tamron’s coating is designed to reduce ghosting and flare, including in backlit scenes. That’s useful when a bright light source sits near the edge of your composition.
  • Quiet RXD autofocus: The RXD stepping motor focuses quietly, a useful trait for video as well as still photography. The lens also supports Sony camera functions including Fast Hybrid AF, Eye AF and DMF.

Specialist Note

The RXD autofocus runs quietly, so focusing doesn’t draw attention to itself while you’re recording video or composing a still. For night skies, I’d start at 11mm and f/2.8: on a Sony APS-C body, that view is equivalent to 16.5mm on full frame, wide enough to include a generous stretch of sky. The same short end works nicely for architecture when you need to fit more of a building into the frame. At the other end, the 0.15m minimum focus distance gives close foreground details real presence in a landscape; move in carefully and keep the background in view. This lens is a strong match for Sony APS-C users who spend time on landscapes, interiors or astro. One trade-off is its range: 20mm remains wide, so you’ll want another lens for more distant subjects.
