Tiffen 44STRK3 4x4 Streak 3mm Filter
Tiffen 44STRK3 4x4 Streak 3mm Filter | Give bright lights a streak effect
Bright points of light become deliberate streaks in the frame, adding a graphic accent to night scenes, music videos and other stylised shots. The Tiffen 44STRK3 is a streak filter for photographers and filmmakers who want that effect in-camera rather than adding it later. It works best when there’s a distinct bright source in the composition, such as a streetlight or a small studio light; softer, evenly lit scenes offer less for the effect to act on. Use it when you want the light itself to become part of the visual design, not just illumination. The result depends on what’s in the frame, so it pays to compose around the bright source and keep the rest of the image intentional. This is a specialist creative filter, rather than an all-purpose filter for everyday image protection.
Using the streak effect
Start with a clear point source of light in the composition. A night street scene can turn a lamp into a graphic feature, while a controlled studio setup lets you place a bright light where it supports the subject. Keep an eye on surrounding highlights too: several strong sources can make the effect busier. This filter is for shaping the look of light, so it’s most useful when you have time to compose and adjust the scene rather than simply record it as it appears.
Specialist Note
The Tiffen 44STRK3 is made to turn bright light sources into streaks, giving a shot a deliberate cinematic accent. Its 4x4 format matters when planning your filter setup: you’ll need a holder designed for that size. The 3mm version gives you a defined option within the Streak range, so it’s worth choosing when that specific streak width suits the look you have in mind. I’d use it for a city-night frame with a streetlight kept clearly in view, or for a studio shot with one bright point source behind the subject. It’s a creative effect, so a scene without strong lights won’t give it much to work with.
