Tiffen FW6BPM18 Filter Wheel 6 BLK Promist 1/8
Tiffen FW6BPM18 Filter Wheel 6 BLK Promist 1/8 | A subtle, softened image
Hard highlights can make a portrait or a practical-light scene feel harsher than you want. The Tiffen FW6BPM18 is a Black Pro-Mist filter with a 1/8 strength, intended to soften the image without making the effect the whole story. It suits photographers and filmmakers who want a gentler rendering of bright points of light while keeping the scene recognisable and detailed. That restrained grade makes it a sensible starting point for close portraits, night scenes with visible lamps, or a polished interview look. The effect depends on the light and the scene, so it won’t give every shot the same glow. This is a creative filter, not a neutral UV filter: choose it for its look, rather than as an invisible layer. The title also identifies it as “Filter Wheel 6”; I’ve kept that designation intact rather than guessing what the 6 refers to.
Specialist Note
One limit to keep in mind: a 1/8 Black Pro-Mist gives a restrained treatment, so it won’t create a strong, misty veil when that’s the look you want. That’s exactly why I’d point it out to someone easing into diffusion. The Black Pro-Mist designation tells you this is about shaping the image, not simply protecting a lens; the 1/8 grade makes the change relatively subtle. For a close portrait, use a soft key light and let a bright background light sit in frame to bring out the gentler highlight character. It also suits an interview with practical lamps behind the subject. I’d choose it for controlled atmosphere, not for a neutral, untouched rendering.
