Tokina Cinema 85mm T1.5 (MFT) | Precise telephoto framing for film

Tokina Cinema 85mm T1.5 (MFT) is a fast short-telephoto prime for filmmakers who want deliberate framing and hands-on focus. Built for Micro Four Thirds cameras, it suits narrative work, interviews and video portraits where you want your subject to feel distinct from the background. Its T1.5 maximum aperture gives you room to work with less light and to shape depth of field, while the approximately 15° angle of view keeps the composition focused on a smaller part of the scene. This is a manual-focus lens, so it’s best matched to a considered pace: setting a focus mark, repeating a move, or adjusting focus as a subject moves through the frame. It’s a specialised focal length rather than an all-purpose view, and that’s useful when the shot calls for compression and a tighter, more selective composition.

Specialist Note

Once your framing is set, manual focus lets you work at a deliberate pace and make each focus move part of the shot. On a Micro Four Thirds body, this focal length gives a 170mm full-frame-equivalent field of view, so allow room to step back; that tight framing is useful for an interview close-up or isolating a face in a scene. The T1.5 aperture gives you more light to work with and lets you keep the background softer when you focus carefully on your subject. I’d favour this lens for controlled dialogue scenes and close details, rather than wide establishing shots. It’s a focused tool, and planning your camera position pays off.
