Urth 77mm Magnetic Ethereal Black Mist Filter Plus+
Urth 77mm Magnetic Ethereal Black Mist Filter Plus+ | Gentle glow around highlights
Bright windows, street lamps or reflections can make a portrait feel a little too crisp and clinical. The Urth Ethereal Black Mist Filter Plus+ is made to soften that look in-camera, giving bright highlights a gentle glow and taking some edge off the image. It suits photographers who want a more atmospheric rendering for portraits, night scenes or available-light video, without relying on an effect added later. The Black Mist character is the point: this isn’t a clear protective filter, and it will influence the look of the whole frame, not just the brightest areas. That can be pleasing with backlight and practical lamps, but less suitable when you want maximum crispness and contrast throughout. Its magnetic design is intended for quick filter changes, while the 77mm size identifies the filter diameter. Choose it for a deliberate soft, cinematic feel rather than as an everyday neutral filter.
Specialist Note
The slim 77mm magnetic rim changes the handling: once you have the matching magnetic setup, you can swap this filter in and out without repeatedly turning a threaded ring. I’d point portrait photographers towards it when they want bright window light to bloom gently around the subject; keep the light source in or just outside the frame to make that effect visible. It can also suit evening street scenes, where illuminated signs and lamps become part of the mood. The trade-off is that the softness affects the whole image, so it’s not my pick when you need a crisp, high-contrast rendering. It’s a considered look, not an invisible filter.
