Urth 82mm Ethereal ½ Black Mist Filter Plus+
Urth 82mm Ethereal ½ Black Mist Filter Plus+ | Softer highlights, atmospheric portraits
A bright window behind your subject or point lights in a night scene can make an image feel harsher than it looked in person. A Black Mist filter is used to soften that impression: highlights bloom gently and contrast feels less stark, without simply blurring the whole picture. The Urth Ethereal ½ Black Mist Filter Plus+ suits portrait photographers and anyone making atmospheric images of performances or evening scenes. Its effect is captured as you shoot, so you can judge the look while composing rather than trying to recreate it later in editing. It’s at its best when you want a visible softness around bright areas and a more expressive feel to the image. If you’re aiming for a strictly crisp, neutral rendering, this is a deliberate look rather than an invisible correction.
Specialist Note
This filter softens bright points at capture, instead of leaving you to fake their glow in editing. The 82mm size means you’ll want a lens with a matching 82mm filter thread. Its ½ strength gives the effect room to show, so I’d consider it for close portraits near a bright window or for night scenes with lamps in the frame. In portraits, let a bright area sit near the subject; for evening images, include a small light source against a darker background to make the bloom part of the mood. It changes the look across the image, so it isn’t the one to reach for when you want everything to stay pin-sharp and neutral.
