Westcott 40 Degree Egg Crate Grid For Beauty Dish & Switch

Westcott 40 Degree Egg Crate Grid For Beauty Dish & Switch | Keep light more controlled

Westcott’s 40 Degree Egg Crate Grid is a light-control accessory for a Beauty Dish and Switch. It’s for photographers who want to shape the light from these modifiers rather than let it spread freely across the scene. The 40-degree designation makes this a focused option when you’re working with a subject or area that needs more controlled illumination. In a portrait setup, that can help keep attention on the part of the frame you’re lighting and reduce unwanted spill onto nearby areas. It’s also useful when you’re adjusting a setup and want a more directed result without changing the modifier itself. The honest trade-off is that a grid narrows where the light goes, so it’s less suited to situations where you want broad, even coverage. If controlling the spread is the goal, this Westcott grid offers a straightforward way to do it.

Putting a grid to work

A grid is most helpful when the direction and reach of the light matter as much as its softness. With this accessory, you can aim the light more deliberately and keep its coverage from spreading as widely. That can make a difference in a portrait or a small, carefully arranged scene, where light falling beyond the subject may distract from the composition. The 40-degree angle gives you a clear starting point for that more restricted spread; it isn’t a promise that every setup will look the same. The result depends on how you position the modifier and subject, so expect to make small adjustments as you work.

Because this grid is described for a Beauty Dish and Switch, its intended role is clear: adding more direction to light from those modifiers. It’s a practical piece to consider when you already use either in your lighting setup and want to keep the illuminated area more contained. Rather than changing your whole arrangement, you can use the grid to refine where the light falls. That’s the point of choosing a 40-degree grid over an unrestricted spread: more deliberate control over the area being lit.
