XEEN CF 85mm T1.5 FF Cine Sony FE | Precise full-frame cine portraits

An 85mm short-telephoto prime gives dialogue and portrait shots a tighter, more deliberate frame, and this XEEN CF is made for full-frame Sony FE setups. It suits filmmakers who want a dedicated lens for carefully composed video, rather than a general-purpose lens for every kind of shot. The 29° angle of view keeps the composition focused on the subject, making it useful for close-ups and interview framing when you have room to position the camera. Its full-frame coverage fits Sony FE cameras with full-frame sensors, while the cine-lens format is intended for video and filmmaking. For narrative scenes, interviews or portrait-led footage, it offers a straightforward way to give a subject more visual presence. Plan your camera position before recording: the short-telephoto view can feel restrictive in a small room.

Specialist Note

A common first misstep with an 85mm cine prime is setting up too close; give this lens some working distance and its framing becomes much easier to manage. At T1.5, you can open the aperture for a dim interior or use a shallow depth of field to separate a speaker from the background. It’s a manual-focus lens, so I’d practise a slow, deliberate focus pull before recording dialogue, especially if the subject moves. On a Sony APS-C body, the framing is equivalent to 127.5mm, which can work well for tightly framed details but may feel too narrow indoors. For interviews and controlled scenes, that reach is a strength; for cramped locations, it’s a real limitation.
