Its 1.5X anamorphic squeeze is useful when you want an anamorphic composition, while the longer focal length helps keep attention on a subject rather than a busy background. It’s a strong fit for cinematographers building controlled scenes, from close dialogue coverage to thoughtful inserts. The Canon EF mount and manual focus suit a deliberate workflow where the operator can set and adjust focus as the shot unfolds. This is a specialist prime for planned images, rather than a lens built around quick, casual reframing.

Specialist Note

A close-up can lose its impact when the background keeps competing for attention; the 85mm focal length gives you a tighter view to work with. For a dialogue shot, I’d start at T2.9, then adjust exposure to suit the scene and pull focus manually between the actors. That aperture also gives you some flexibility when the set isn’t brightly lit.
