Tokina Cinema 85mm T1.5 (PL) | Fast aperture for cinematic close-ups

Tokina Cinema 85mm T1.5 (PL) is a short-telephoto prime with a T1.5 maximum aperture, built for filmmakers who want precise control over framing and focus. It suits cinematographers and video makers working on narrative scenes, interviews and tightly framed details, especially when the camera position and focus can be managed deliberately. The 85mm focal length gives faces and subjects a close, selective framing style, while the bright maximum aperture can help when available light is limited and allows a shallow depth of field. Focus is manual, so this lens is for operators who want to set focus themselves rather than depend on autofocus. As a prime, it has a fixed focal length: plan your composition around camera placement and subject movement instead of zooming. It’s particularly at home in controlled scenes where a considered frame matters more than quick reframing.

Specialist Note

Filmmakers shaping interview portraits, close details and composed dialogue scenes will get the most from this 85mm. I’d use T1.5 when light is scarce or when you want the subject to sit clearly apart from the background; with such a bright setting, accurate manual focus takes attention, especially on a close face. For an interview, settle the framing first, then make small focus adjustments as the subject moves rather than expecting autofocus to follow. The fixed focal length is the honest trade-off: you’ll need to reposition the camera to change the composition. That makes this Tokina a considered tool for planned shots, rather than a lens for rapid reframing.
