Laowa 15mm F/5 Cookie FF Silver Nikon Z (Auto Aperture)
Laowa 15mm F/5 Cookie FF Silver Nikon Z (Auto Aperture) | A broad view for landscapes and architecture
The combination of a 15mm focal length and full-frame coverage gives this Laowa a broad perspective in a distinctive silver finish. It’s an ultra-wide prime for Nikon Z photographers who want to fit more of a scene into the frame, especially when photographing landscapes or architecture. The 111° angle of view takes in a wide sweep, making it easier to include foreground detail alongside a building or distant view. Its maximum aperture is f/5, and this version has auto-aperture operation; focusing remains manual, so you choose and set focus yourself. That suits photographers who prefer a considered approach to composition and focusing over relying on autofocus. For architecture, the wide view can help include more of a façade when space is tight. For landscapes, it gives you room to build a foreground-led composition. It’s a specialist lens for expansive views, rather than a general-purpose focal length.
What this lens brings
- Wide-angle framing: Fit more of a scene into the frame when you can’t step farther back.
- Manual focus: Set your focus point deliberately for carefully composed scenes.
- Silver finish: A distinctive look for a lens that’s as purposeful in its framing as it is in appearance.
Composition advice
With an ultra-wide view, foreground placement has a strong effect on the picture. For a landscape, try including a nearby rock, path or plant to lead the eye into the distance. When photographing buildings, keep the camera level where possible; tilting it upward can make vertical lines appear to lean. If you do want that dramatic perspective, make the tilt a deliberate part of the composition.
Specialist Note
15mm gives you a very wide frame, which is useful when a building is close or you want foreground and distant landscape together. I’d use the 111° view to place a clear foreground detail low in the frame, then keep the camera level for straighter architectural lines. The f/5 maximum aperture is a sensible reason to favour daylight or a steady support when light gets low; it’s less suited to dim interiors or strongly blurred backgrounds. Manual focus rewards a measured setup, so take a moment to set your focus before composing. It’s a focused tool for wide scenes, not a do-everything lens.
