The 16mm focal length lets filmmakers include both a subject and its surroundings, which is useful for establishing shots, confined interiors and scenes where the location matters to the story. This is the Canon version of an interchangeable lens, designed for video and filmmaking. Its wide-angle perspective can give a nearby subject strong presence while keeping plenty of context in the frame, so camera position matters. Move closer for an immersive composition, or keep some distance when you want the surroundings to carry more of the scene. If you need tight framing from one fixed camera position, a 16mm prime may not suit the job; it rewards careful composition and considered camera movement.
