7Artisans 55mm f/1.4 - APS-C - Canon EF-M-Mount - Black | Bright, controlled framing for portraits

Portraits get a closer, more deliberate feel with this standard prime, which keeps attention on your subject rather than a wide stretch of surroundings. The 7Artisans 55mm f/1.4 is a manual-focus lens for Canon EF-M cameras, designed for APS-C bodies. Its bright maximum aperture gives you room to work in softer light and can help separate a face from the background when you focus carefully. It suits photographers who like to direct a sitter, make head-and-shoulders portraits, or bring one person forward in a frame. Manual focus rewards a measured approach: take a moment to place focus on the eyes and compose with care. That makes this lens less suited to scenes that change quickly, where instant refocusing matters. For patient portrait work, its focused field of view and straightforward prime-lens design make it easy to concentrate on expression and framing.

Specialist Note

55mm gives portraits a tighter view, so you can frame a face without including much of the room around it. On a Canon EOS M body, that’s roughly the angle of view of an 88mm lens on full frame. I’d use f/1.4 for a softly separated head-and-shoulders portrait, then take care to focus on the nearer eye; the wide aperture makes precise focus important. The APS-C format is a natural match for this lens on EOS M cameras. It’s best for a sitter who can hold a pose, rather than fast-moving subjects, since focusing is manual. If you enjoy taking time over a portrait, that deliberate pace can be part of the appeal.
