B+W 106 Neutral Density Filter ND64 - 1.8/64X/+6 Diaph - 46mm | Smooth motion in bright conditions

In bright light, a fast shutter speed can freeze every ripple and wave; the B+W 106 Neutral Density Filter lets you deliberately use a slower one. This is a 46mm ND64 filter, also described as 1.8 density or 64X, giving six stops of light reduction. It suits photographers who want to control exposure in daylight, especially when they want movement in water or clouds to appear softer rather than frozen. For example, if your meter suggests 1/125 sec without the filter, six stops less light brings that exposure to about 1/2 sec, keeping the aperture and ISO unchanged. That’s a practical starting point for a flowing-water effect; a tripod helps keep the stationary parts of the scene sharp. The fixed reduction is its useful simplicity, though it won’t let you vary the strength: choose your shutter speed and aperture around the six-stop change.

Specialist Note

“Will this let me slow my shutter in daylight?” Yes: the ND64 cuts the light reaching the camera by 64 times, or six stops. That gives you room to turn a 1/125 sec exposure into roughly 1/2 sec without changing the aperture or ISO. For a stream or small waterfall, that can soften the moving water; use a tripod so the surrounding rocks stay crisp. The 46mm size is the key practical detail here: it’s intended for a lens that takes a 46mm filter. I’d choose this when a six-stop reduction suits the shot, rather than when I need adjustable strength or only a subtle change.
