B+W 501 ND Gradient Filter 50% F-PRO - 62mm
B+W 501 ND Gradient Filter 50% F-PRO - 62mm | Balance bright skies with darker foregrounds
This B+W 501 is a graduated neutral-density filter: it reduces light across part of the frame, helping balance a bright sky with a darker landscape. That makes it useful for landscape photographers who want to retain detail in both areas without darkening the whole scene with a full-frame filter. It’s especially suited to broad, fairly level horizons, such as open water or a flat coastal view, where the graduated area can sit over the sky. The result depends on how the bright and dark parts of your scene line up with the filter’s transition, so it won’t correct every contrast problem. A jagged skyline of trees or buildings can make the effect harder to blend naturally. For simpler horizons, though, this is a focused way to manage the difference in brightness at capture rather than relying on a heavy edit later.
Specialist Note
50% means the graded area passes half the light, roughly one stop less; in practice, that’s a measured reduction for a bright sky rather than heavy darkening. I’d suggest it to landscape photographers who want to hold detail in a pale sky while keeping the foreground more naturally exposed. For a sunrise over open water, compose so the horizon falls within the graduated area, then expose for the scene. The 62mm size suits a lens with a matching 62mm filter thread, and F-PRO identifies this version. With trees or buildings cutting across the skyline, the gradient can be more noticeable, so it’s best suited to cleaner horizons.
