B+W Black Mist 1/2 MRC Nano V-PRO 58mm
B+W Black Mist 1/2 MRC Nano V-PRO 58mm | A softer glow around highlights
The defining choice is a half-strength Black Mist effect: it softens the rendering of bright areas and gives highlights a gentle glow. That makes this filter a good fit for photographers who want a less crisp, more atmospheric look straight from the camera, especially for portraits, evening scenes and video with point lights in the frame. It can take the hard edge off a bright background behind a subject, or give practical lights in a night scene a softer presence. The effect is optical, so you see it while composing rather than adding it later in editing. This is a creative look, not a neutral filter for every situation: if you want clean, sharply defined highlights, Black Mist may be the wrong treatment. The name also specifies MRC Nano and V-PRO, identifying this B+W filter version; the strength and 58mm size are the key details to match to your intended look and lens.
Specialist Note
Portrait makers and filmmakers who like bright lamps or reflections to feel softer will get the most from this Black Mist. The 1/2 strength gives the effect room to show, so I’d use it when you want a visible glow around highlights rather than a barely-there change. For a portrait, keep a bright window or lamp behind your subject and let the filter soften its edge; for a night scene, include small points of light to bring out the atmospheric look. The 58mm size matters when matching it to a lens with a 58mm filter thread. One thing to bear in mind: this is a deliberate rendering choice, and it won’t suit scenes where you want highlights to stay crisp.
