Canon OA-2 Flash Off-Camera Shoe Adapter | Fire flash off-camera for portraits and product shots

More deliberate-looking portraits and product images start with being able to fire a flash away from the camera. The Canon OA-2 Flash Off-Camera Shoe Adapter is a flash trigger/transmitter for that job, letting you trigger off-camera flashes for more control over where the light comes from. It suits photographers who want to shape light around a person or an object, especially for portraits and product work. Position the flash to one side of a portrait subject to create shape, or adjust its direction around a product to bring out surface detail. The OA-2 has a focused role: it triggers a flash; it isn’t itself a flash or a lighting kit. If you want to work with light coming from somewhere other than the camera, this adapter is designed for that task.

Specialist Note

2 is the identifier in OA-2; in practice, it names the adapter you’re choosing, not a flash setting to change. Its role as a transmitter matters when you want a flash to fire away from the camera, and that off-camera placement gives you more say over the direction of light. For a portrait, put the flash to one side of the subject to create shape; for a product, angle it to reveal texture. I’d recommend it to someone who wants to make those lighting choices with an off-camera flash. One honest point: the OA-2 handles triggering, so you’ll still need a flash to provide the light.
