Epson EcoTank ET-8500

Epson EcoTank ET-8500 | A4 photo printing with six-colour ink

The Epson EcoTank ET-8500 is a six-colour inkjet photo printer that prints photographs up to A4 size. It’s an all-in-one for creative households and anyone who wants to print photographs as well as everyday documents, with scanning and copying included. The six inks include grey for black-and-white photographs and pigment black for sharp text on plain paper, so the printer can handle both photo projects and written work. For a run of prints, Epson states that one set of ink bottles can produce up to 2,300 high-quality photos; that’s the detail to consider if you print often and want to avoid replacing small cartridges. Use it for A4 photo prints, copies of household documents or scanned pages you need to keep digitally. Wireless and Ethernet connections give it options for joining a home network, while the built-in screen and direct printing from storage media make it possible to work at the printer too. It’s a substantial set of functions in one machine, and the ink system is the feature that most clearly distinguishes it from a cartridge-based photo printer.

What it does

• Six-colour ink system: Epson’s Claria ET Premium set uses black, photo black, cyan, magenta, yellow and grey. Grey ink supports black-and-white photo printing, while the separate pigment black is intended for crisp text on plain paper.
• Photo prints up to A4: Print photos at sizes up to A4, a useful format for display prints and creative projects. Epson describes the output as durable, so the printer is suited to photographs you plan to keep rather than only temporary drafts.
• High stated ink yield: Epson quotes up to 2,300 high-quality photos from one set of ink bottles. The refillable tank system replaces disposable cartridges, and the bottle and tank design is intended to make topping up straightforward and less messy.
• Print, scan and copy: The ET-8500 combines three everyday functions in one device. That means you can make a copy at home or scan a page as well as print a photograph, without needing separate machines for those tasks.
• Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct and Ethernet: Connect the printer to a home network wirelessly or by Ethernet, or use Wi-Fi Direct. These connection options cover both networked setups and direct wireless printing.
• Touchscreen and direct media access: A 10.9 cm colour touchscreen provides printer controls, and the five-way media handling supports different print media. You can also print from an SD card or USB flash drive at the printer.
• Epson Smart Panel app: Use the app on a smart device to print photos, copy documents, set up the printer and troubleshoot. It also offers creative templates for photo and craft projects.

Good to know

The printer measures 403 × 369 × 162 mm and weighs 8.4 kg, so allow for its footprint when deciding where it will sit. Scanning is specified at 1,200 × 4,800 dpi, which gives you a stated resolution for digitising documents and other originals. These details are useful to weigh alongside the printer’s photo and document functions when planning a home setup.
