Formatt Hitech FC ND 72mm Graduated ND 0.9 (3stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech FC ND 72mm Graduated ND 0.9 (3stops) Filter | Balance bright skies and darker foregrounds
The defining choice here is a graduated neutral-density filter rather than an even ND: its darker area reduces light across part of the frame, leaving the rest less affected. That makes it useful when a bright sky sits above a much darker foreground and you want to retain detail in both in one exposure. The Formatt Hitech FC ND 0.9 suits landscape photography, coastal scenes and city skylines where the brightness changes across the composition. Place the denser area over the bright region and align the transition with the scene. It’s a direct way to manage contrast at capture, rather than letting the sky wash out or relying on a heavy edit later. Its fixed strength is best suited to scenes with a pronounced brightness gap; it may be more reduction than you need in softer light.
Specialist Note
Late sun brightens the sky above a shaded shoreline, and this is where the FC ND earns its place: put the darker part over the sky and line its transition up with the horizon, so the foreground doesn’t have to be underexposed to save the highlights. The 72mm size is the key fit detail; match it to a lens with a 72mm filter thread. Its 0.9 density cuts three stops, a meaningful reduction when the sky is much brighter than the land. I’d recommend it to landscape photographers who want to balance that contrast in-camera. One limit: the strength is fixed, so a subtler scene may call for less reduction.
