Formatt Hitech FC ND 77mm Graduated ND 0.6 (2stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech FC ND 77mm Graduated ND 0.6 (2stops) Filter | Balance bright skies and darker foregrounds
Without a graduated filter, a bright sky and a darker foreground can be difficult to hold in the same exposure: expose for the sky and the land may turn too dark; expose for the land and the sky can lose detail. This Formatt Hitech filter is made for that kind of contrast. Its graduated neutral-density effect reduces light in part of the frame, helping bring a bright area closer to the exposure of the rest of the scene. It suits landscape photographers and anyone framing a scene with a clear difference in brightness across the image, such as a sunlit sky above a darker view. The benefit is most direct when that difference follows a fairly clear boundary, so the graduation can sit over the bright area without unnecessarily darkening the subject below. It’s a simple way to manage contrast at capture rather than relying entirely on adjustments later.
Specialist Note
“Will this 77mm graduated filter help with a bright sky over a darker landscape?” Yes—that’s exactly the contrast its graduated ND is designed to address. The 0.6 density gives a two-stop reduction in the covered part of the image, so you can expose the scene longer while holding back the sky. As a guide, two stops is the difference between 1/500s and 1/125s. I’d use it for a landscape with a reasonably clear horizon, placing the darker part over the sky; it’s less suited to a scene where tall, bright subjects cross that boundary. If your lens takes a 77mm filter, this is a focused option for that specific exposure problem.
