Formatt Hitech FC ND 82mm Graduated ND 0.6 (2stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech FC ND 82mm Graduated ND 0.6 (2stops) Filter | Keep bright skies in balance
Keep a bright sky from dominating your picture while retaining detail in the darker land below it. The Formatt Hitech FC ND 82mm Graduated ND 0.6 Filter is a graduated neutral-density filter, so its darkening is confined to part of the frame rather than applied evenly across the whole image. That makes it especially useful for landscapes and outdoor scenes where the sky is much brighter than the ground, and you want both to register more evenly in one exposure. It suits photographers who work with that kind of contrast and want to manage it at the camera, rather than relying on a darker overall exposure that can leave the land too dim. The filter’s two-stop reduction gives a measured correction, rather than an extreme one. It’s a focused tool for scenes with a relatively clear division between sky and foreground; it can be less suitable when important details cross that boundary.
Where it helps
Look for a scene where a bright sky meets a darker foreground, such as an open landscape or a shoreline. Position the graduated section over the brighter part of the view, then compose so the transition sits near the natural divide between sky and land. The aim is a more balanced exposure across the frame, without asking the camera to darken the foreground along with the sky. If trees, buildings or a mountain ridge break across the transition, check their tones in the image: the filter can darken those details as well. A cleaner horizon generally makes the graduated effect easier to place.
Specialist Note
The Formatt Hitech FC ND 82mm Graduated ND 0.6 Filter is made for taming a bright sky while keeping the foreground readable. Its 0.6 density gives a two-stop reduction in the graduated area, a useful amount when the sky is ahead of the land but you don’t want a heavy effect. The 82mm size gives you a clear measurement to match against your lens’s filter fitting. I’d recommend it to landscape photographers working with a defined horizon; it can help with open countryside or a shoreline when you place the darker part over the sky. One limitation: a broken skyline can make the transition more noticeable, so it’s less forgiving when branches or buildings cross the horizon.
