Formatt Hitech FC ND 95mm Graduated ND 1.2 (4stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech FC ND 95mm Graduated ND 1.2 (4stops) Filter | Balance bright skies with darker foregrounds
Formatt Hitech FC ND 95mm Graduated ND 1.2 (4stops) Filter gives a four-stop reduction through its denser area. It’s for landscape photographers and anyone framing a bright sky alongside darker land or water. The graduated density lets you reduce the brighter part of the scene without applying the same reduction across the whole frame. That makes it especially useful when the sky would otherwise dominate the exposure: compose with the transition near the horizon, then expose for the scene you want to retain below it. The 1.2 density is a strong four-stop adjustment, so it’s suited to scenes with a pronounced difference in brightness, rather than subtle balancing. A graduated filter also needs a boundary that works with the composition; uneven rooflines or trees can make that harder than a clean horizon. The 95mm size is the other key detail when choosing this filter for your setup.
Specialist Note
A low sun sits above a flat shoreline, and the bright sky competes with the darker foreground. In that kind of frame, I’d use the graduated area to hold back the sky while keeping the land from taking the same four-stop cut. The ND 1.2 strength is a substantial adjustment, so it makes most sense when the brightness difference is clear; for a gentler contrast, this may be more than you need. With a skyline, keep the transition around the roofline in mind, since buildings that reach into the brighter area can be darkened too. The 95mm size is useful to keep in view when planning the filter setup you’ll use it with.
