Formatt Hitech FC ND 95mm Graduated ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech FC ND 95mm Graduated ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter | Balance bright skies
The defining choice is the graduated ND treatment: it reduces light over part of the image rather than across the whole frame, helping a bright sky sit closer to the exposure of darker land. This 95mm filter suits photographers composing landscapes and other views with a clear difference in brightness across the frame. It’s most useful for open horizons, coastlines and city views where a bright upper area could leave the foreground too dark, or force a compromise in exposure. The graduated effect lets you place the reduction over the brighter area while keeping the rest of the scene less affected. This is a focused tool for balancing a scene, not a general way to darken every part of it; the result depends on how the bright and dark areas meet in your composition.
Using the graduated area
Compose first, then position the transition across the boundary between bright sky and darker ground. Keep an eye on anything that rises above the horizon: trees, rooflines or cliffs may enter the darker part too. The filter affects the scene across its graduated area; it doesn’t select only the sky. With a broken or uneven skyline, careful placement and a small change in framing can help keep the effect where you want it.
Specialist Note
Landscape photographers framing bright skies over darker shorelines or fields are the people I’d point toward this filter. Its 95mm designation is the size to account for in your filter-support setup, so make sure your support is arranged for that format. The 1.5 rating gives a five-stop reduction in the treated area: expose for the land, then position the graduated area across the sky when it’s overpowering the foreground. That’s a strong correction, not a subtle nudge. I’d be cautious with tree lines or rooftops reaching into the sky; they can be darkened too, because the filter follows the frame rather than recognising subjects.
