Formatt Hitech Firecrest 86-72mm Step Ring
Formatt Hitech Firecrest 86-72mm Step Ring | Use larger filters on a smaller thread
Keep a larger filter in your kit and use it with a lens that has a smaller filter thread. This Formatt Hitech step ring connects a 72 mm lens thread to an 86 mm filter, so you can adapt your filter setup rather than needing a filter in every size. It suits photographers who already own filters in the larger size and want to use them on a lens with the smaller thread. Fit the ring between the lens and filter; it bridges the difference in diameter. That makes it a straightforward bit of kit for a mixed lens bag, especially when you want to keep your filter choices consistent across lenses. It’s a practical accessory, not a filter itself, so it won’t alter colour, reflections or exposure on its own.
How it fits your setup
Use the ring to pair a lens with a 72 mm filter thread and a filter sized for the larger opening. It’s a simple way to share filters between those two sizes. Keep the ring with the filter you plan to use, then screw it into place between the lens and filter.
Specialist Note
First-time step-ring buyers often focus on the filter size and miss the lens-side measurement; this ring makes the pairing clear. The 72 mm end is the one to match to your lens, while the 86 mm end takes the larger filter. I’d suggest it to someone who already has filters in that larger size and wants to use them on a lens with a narrower thread. For example, fit the ring before attaching your filter when you move that filter to the smaller-thread lens. Just remember, it solves a size mismatch; it doesn’t add any filtering effect of its own.
