Formatt Hitech Firecrest 86-77mm Step Ring
Formatt Hitech Firecrest 86-77mm Step Ring | Bridge two filter sizes
The 86-to-77mm size pairing is the defining choice here: it lets you connect filter-thread sizes that don’t match, rather than limiting a filter to a lens with the same thread diameter. Formatt Hitech’s Firecrest step ring is for photographers who already have a filter in one of these sizes and want to use it with a setup using the other. It’s a small piece of kit, but it can save you from buying a duplicate filter just to cover a different thread size. The ring is best for straightforward size adaptation when working with 86mm and 77mm filter threads. Think of it as a practical link between those two sizes, not as a filter in its own right. If your kit uses other thread diameters, this particular ring won’t bridge them.
Specialist Note
Setting up is simple: the ring bridges the 77mm and 86mm sizes, so you can match a filter and lens with different thread diameters without changing the filter itself. I’d consider it if you have an 86mm filter and a lens with a 77mm thread; it’s a direct way to make those two sizes work together. It can also help when you want to keep using a filter you already own as your lens setup changes between those sizes. The useful detail is the exact size pairing: it’s specific, not a general adapter for every filter in your bag. I’d check that both ends of your intended setup match those measurements before choosing it.
