Formatt Hitech Firecrest 86-86mm Geared Magnetic Ring
Formatt Hitech Firecrest 86-86mm Geared Magnetic Ring | Magnetic handling with geared control
The geared magnetic design is the defining choice: it combines magnetic filter handling with a ring made for gear-driven adjustment. That suits photographers who want to work with filters through a geared setup rather than rely on turning an un-geared edge by hand. The 86-86mm designation makes this a specific size choice for a filter arrangement built around 86mm. It’s aimed at people putting together or refining that kind of setup, especially if they value being able to attach and remove filters as part of their working routine. The magnetic approach is handy when you want to change your filter arrangement between compositions; the geared design is relevant when adjustment is controlled through gearing. Its red colour also makes the ring easy to identify among your accessories. One point to keep clear: this is a ring, not a filter, so its role is in the filter setup rather than changing the image on its own.
Specialist Note
Changing a filter setup is where the magnetic design comes into its own: it’s made for quick attachment and removal, while the geared format gives you a way to work with gear-driven adjustment. I’d look at this for an 86mm arrangement where you want both of those handling choices in the same ring. For example, it suits a workflow where you remove or change filters between compositions, then use geared control when adjustment is needed. The red finish makes the ring easier to pick out among accessories. Just remember what you’re buying: it’s the ring for a filter setup, not a filter that alters the picture by itself.
