Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 150x150mm (6x6) ND 4.8 (16stops)
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 150x150mm (6x6) ND 4.8 (16stops) | Long exposures in bright conditions
Moving water can become a smooth sweep, while clouds drift into soft streaks across a frame. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 4.8 is a square-format neutral-density filter that reduces the light reaching your camera, giving you room to use longer shutter speeds in bright conditions. It suits landscape photographers shaping the movement of rivers, surf or clouds, and photographers who want to explore longer exposures in daylight. The benefit is control over how motion appears in the picture: choose a longer exposure to blur moving elements while keeping the rest of the scene composed as you want it. This is a specialist-strength filter, so it’s best approached with an exposure worked out in advance rather than fitted casually halfway through a shot. If long exposures are part of your way of photographing a scene, it offers a direct route to that softer sense of movement.
Specialist Note
16 stops means a shutter speed of 1/125 sec becomes roughly 8 minutes 44 seconds, with the other exposure settings unchanged. That’s enough to turn flowing water into a much softer surface, or let moving clouds trace across a landscape. I’d take a meter reading and compose before adding the filter, then calculate the longer exposure; at these times, a small exposure error can add up. The 150 x 150 mm square format calls for a filter setup made to accommodate that size, so plan for a deliberate setup rather than a quick pocket-sized adjustment. It suits photographers who want pronounced motion blur and are happy to work methodically for it.
