Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 46mm ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 46mm ND 1.5 (5stops) Filter | Longer exposures in bright light
Without an ND filter, bright daylight often means using a fast shutter speed, even when you want movement in the frame. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 46mm ND 1.5 Filter cuts the light reaching the camera by five stops, giving you room to choose a slower shutter speed without changing the scene’s lighting. It suits photographers who want to show motion in water, clouds or passing traffic, and anyone working in bright conditions who needs more exposure control. For example, a 1/30-second exposure becomes roughly one second with five stops of reduction, which can give flowing water a softer appearance. The 46mm size is intended for a lens with a matching filter thread. This is a straightforward, specific tool: it reduces light, so you can use longer exposures when the available light would otherwise make them impractical.
Specialist Note
The five-stop reduction is a set amount, so this isn’t the filter for fine, on-the-fly adjustment; it’s a good fit when you know you want a slower shutter. The 46mm size makes the thread diameter the key thing to match to your lens. If you’re photographing a stream in daylight, take a meter reading first, then apply the five-stop reduction—for instance, a starting point of 1/30 sec becomes about one second. That’s long enough to soften moving water while keeping the rest of your framing deliberate. I’d point this out to someone who wants a simple way to make motion visible, rather than a filter with variable strength.
