Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 52mm ND 2.1 (7stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 52mm ND 2.1 (7stops) Filter | Slow the shutter in bright light
Bright daylight can leave you with a shutter speed that’s too fast for the motion you want to show. This Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND filter reduces the light reaching the camera by seven stops, giving you more room to use a longer exposure in bright conditions. It suits photographers who want moving water to blur or clouds to travel across the frame rather than appear frozen. It can also help when you want a wider aperture in strong light. The ND 2.1 strength is a substantial reduction, so it’s most useful when you’re deliberately aiming for a pronounced change in exposure—not for a subtle adjustment. Fit it to a lens with a 52mm filter thread, set your exposure for the scene, then account for the filter’s light reduction when choosing your shutter speed. That makes it easier to plan the effect before you take the shot.
Specialist Note
Seven stops can be too much if you only want a modest shutter-speed change; the upside is that this filter gives you a meaningful extension when daylight is still strong. I’d suggest it to someone working with a lens that takes a 52mm filter and aiming for clearly blurred water or moving clouds. For example, start from a metered 1/125 sec exposure: seven stops longer brings you to about 1 sec, which can give water a flowing look. The 52mm size matters because the filter needs to match the lens’s filter thread. It’s a focused tool for longer exposures, rather than an everyday brightness tweak.
