Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 58mm ND 0.9 (3stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 58mm ND 0.9 (3stops) Filter | Three stops of light control for slower shutter speeds
Without an ND filter, a bright scene can force you to use a faster shutter speed or a smaller aperture than you want. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 58mm ND 0.9 Filter reduces the light reaching your camera by three stops, giving you more room to choose your exposure settings. It suits photographers who want to show movement in a scene or keep a wider aperture in bright conditions. For example, that extra control can help soften the look of moving water without relying on an extremely slow shutter speed. The 58mm size is for a lens that takes a 58mm filter. This is a straightforward, moderate-strength ND filter: useful when three stops of reduction will do the job, but not a substitute for a much stronger filter when you want very long exposures in bright light.
What three stops changes
Three stops gives you a practical amount of exposure adjustment. If your starting shutter speed is 1/125 sec, you can lengthen it to about 1/15 sec while keeping the same exposure, provided you leave the other settings unchanged. That can bring a little more movement into water or passing clouds. You can also use the light reduction to hold a wider aperture when the scene is bright. The exact result depends on the light and the subject, so treat those settings as a starting point rather than a fixed recipe.
Specialist Note
“Will this 58mm Firecrest filter give me enough room to slow the shutter?” Yes, if you need a measured three-stop reduction rather than an extreme long-exposure effect. The 58mm diameter matters at the lens: match it to a lens marked for 58mm filters. For gently moving water, for instance, a starting exposure of 1/125 sec can become roughly 1/15 sec at the same exposure, which can soften ripples. It also helps when you want to keep a wider aperture in bright light. I’d suggest it to someone who has a specific, moderate exposure adjustment in mind; three stops won’t turn a bright midday scene into a very long exposure.
