Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 58mm ND 1.8 (6stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 58mm ND 1.8 (6stops) Filter | Create longer exposures in daylight
Slow a bright-day shutter speed enough to soften flowing water or show movement in clouds. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 58mm ND 1.8 (6stops) Filter reduces the light reaching your camera by six stops, giving you room to use a longer exposure without changing the scene’s lighting. Six stops means you can use an exposure 64 times longer: for example, 1/125 sec becomes about half a second at the same exposure. That can turn fast-moving water into a softer, more continuous shape. It also suits photographers who want more control over shutter speed in bright conditions, rather than having to work with the short exposures daylight demands. The ND 1.8 rating gives you a clear, fixed amount of light reduction to plan around. It’s a focused tool for deliberate motion effects, rather than a filter with an adjustable strength.
Specialist Note
The 58mm diameter is the practical detail to match to your lens; it keeps the filter choice straightforward if your lens takes 58mm filters. I’d suggest this to someone who wants to make movement part of the picture, especially with a stream or a bank of moving cloud. The six-stop reduction gives you a useful starting point: if your unfiltered meter reading is 1/125 sec, you can work around half a second at the same aperture and ISO. For flowing water, that’s enough to begin softening the movement while retaining visible texture. Just bear in mind that six stops is a fixed reduction, so you can’t dial in a lighter effect with this filter.
