Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 58mm ND 2.1 (7stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 58mm ND 2.1 (7stops) Filter | Create longer exposures in bright light
Bright light can force you into a fast shutter speed just when you want moving water to blur or clouds to drift across the frame. This Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND filter reduces the light reaching the camera by seven stops, giving you room to use a longer exposure. Its ND 2.1 rating identifies that level of light reduction. It suits photographers who want to control shutter speed in daylight, particularly for long-exposure landscapes and scenes with flowing water. It can also help when you want a slower shutter speed without changing the look you’re aiming for through aperture adjustments alone. The effect depends on the light and your starting exposure, so take a fresh meter reading after fitting the filter. This is a strong reduction, best used when you have a clear reason to slow the shutter rather than for a small exposure adjustment.
Specialist Note
“Will this Firecrest fit my lens?” It’s made for a 58mm filter thread, so match that figure to the thread size on your lens. The ND 2.1 rating gives you a substantial cut in light: for example, a shutter speed of 1/125 sec becomes about one second after seven stops, which can soften the movement of a stream or let clouds blur during a landscape exposure. I’d recommend it to someone who specifically wants that longer-shutter look in bright conditions. Bear in mind that seven stops is a lot if you only need a modest change; for those situations, this filter may reduce more light than you want.
