Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 58mm ND 3 (10stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 58mm ND 3 (10stops) Filter | Make long exposures in daylight
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 58mm ND 3 (10stops) Filter reduces light by 10 stops, giving you room to use much longer shutter speeds in bright conditions. It’s for photographers who want to smooth moving water, soften the movement of clouds or use a wide aperture outdoors without letting in too much light. The 58mm size is for a lens with a matching filter thread. The key appeal is its strong, fixed density: rather than making a small exposure adjustment, it lets you make a dramatic change to shutter speed while keeping your chosen aperture and ISO. That makes it especially suited to deliberate long-exposure work with a tripod. It’s a focused tool, though; a 10-stop reduction may be more than you need when you only want a modest change in exposure.
Planning a long exposure
Use your normal exposure reading as a starting point, then account for the 10-stop reduction when setting the shutter speed. For example, a reading of 1/30 sec becomes about 34 seconds at the same aperture and ISO. That gives moving water time to blur while stationary parts of the scene remain defined, provided the camera stays steady. A tripod and a way to calculate the adjusted exposure are sensible companions for this kind of work.
Specialist Note
Photographers framing waterfalls, coastlines or cloud-filled skies will get the most from this Firecrest filter. The 58mm size means you’ll need a lens with a matching filter thread, so it’s worth matching that measurement to the lens you plan to use. Its ND 3 density cuts exposure by 10 stops; as a practical example, a 1/30 sec reading works out at roughly 34 seconds without changing aperture or ISO. That’s enough to turn flowing water into a soft blur or give clouds time to move through a composition. I’d choose it for committed long exposures, rather than everyday exposure tweaks—the fixed reduction is substantial.
