Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 62mm ND 0.9 (3stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 62mm ND 0.9 (3stops) Filter | Control bright light with a three-stop reduction
Without an ND filter, bright conditions can leave you choosing between a faster shutter speed and a smaller aperture. The Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 0.9 reduces the light reaching your camera by three stops, giving you more room to choose the exposure effect you want. It’s a straightforward option for photographers who want to slow a shutter in daylight or use a wider aperture when the scene is bright. For example, a three-stop reduction can turn a metered 1/60-second exposure into roughly 1/8 second, making moving water appear smoother if the scene and camera remain steady. The 62mm size is the key fit detail: it’s intended for a lens that accepts 62mm filters. This filter has a fixed three-stop strength, so it’s best when that amount of light reduction suits the conditions and the look you’re after.
Specialist Note
“Will this ND 0.9 actually let me use a slower shutter in daylight?” Yes: it cuts three stops, so a reading of 1/60 second becomes about 1/8 second without changing the other exposure settings. That’s handy for giving flowing water a softer appearance; use a steady support and keep the framing fixed during the exposure. The 62mm diameter matters just as much in practice: your lens needs to accept 62mm filters, so check the marking on the lens before choosing this size. I’d point this one towards someone who has a specific three-stop job in mind. It’s a fixed-strength filter, so it won’t cover every brightness level on its own.
